Igår fick de flesta kunder och medlemmar på det officiella forumet nyheten om att man tänker släppa denna utmärkta kontrollpanel till Windows som Open Source.

We are excited to announce that SMB SAAS Systems Inc. has revised theDotNetPanel codebase and posted that new code under the new name "WebsitePanel" to SourceForge.NET as an open source project.

WebsitePanel is a line-of-business application and we recognize the benefits of using an open source development model as a more agile and flexible way to meet the growing needs of the web hosting community.

This will enable the hosting and development community to directly contribute to the future of the project, ensuring WebsitePanel’s continued development as an affordable and scalable control panel for Microsoft Windows hosting.

With this change, software developers and hosting providers can now easily integrate WebsitePanel directly into their own offerings and extend the functionality and features to meet their customers’ Windows hosting needs.

For current DotNetPanel customers SMB SAAS Systems Inc. will be providing free community support for a limited time. Future new versions and product updates (including enterprise modules) and bug fixes will be available at no cost to all customers via the WebsitePanel open source project.

We encourage all our customers to move to the WebsitePanel, which will continue to be supported, and participate in WebsitePanel project at SourceForge.NET.

Det spekuleras redan på marknaden vad var orsaken till detta. Strax innan årets slut, 2009, upphörde nästan all kontakt av företaget med omvärlden. Förmodligen för att panelen skulle ompacketeras till det nya formatet.

Nu ryktas att det är antingen Parallels (Plesk, Ensim, Helm, H-Sphere ....) eller Microsoft som betalt företaget för att släppa denna panel som Open Source. Än så länge endast spekulationer, då ingen information har publicerats som förklaring till detta.

? Parallels för att slippa en mycket bra panel som konkurrent och man hoppas att den går i graven som Open Source.

? Kanske var det Microsoft för att stimulera webbhotellmarknaden med en mycket bra panel.

Vissa gamla kunder rasar mot detta och vissa tycker detta är en stort steg framåt och tror verkligen på att detta kommer ge en mycket bra Windowspanel i framtiden. De flesta håller dock med om att det är lysande att företaget inte sålde ut till Parallels, såsom t.ex. Helm, då Parallels redan har en väldigt dominerande nästintill monopolliknande ställning för Windows.

Personligt vet jag inte vad jag skall tycka. Panelen är mycket bra, stöder det mesta man vill ha och dessutom har den varit gratis för de som har en server, inga kunder, men många sidor och administrera. Tycker den har varit och är mycket bättre en HELM i många avseenden. Bättre än Plesk och HC också ...
