Vissa använder uttrycket "Web 2.0" för att beskriva den visuella trenden som uppstod (gloss, reflektioner, gradients, etc.), medan andra använder uttrycket för att beskriva den teknologiska utvecklingen i form och kombination av AJAX, XHTML/CSS, etc. Sedan finns det dem som använder uttrycket för att beskriva sajter vars främsta syfte är att underlätta för användare att skapa och dela med sig av video, bilder, information, etc.
