Marketing on LinkedIn can(in my view) be beneficial if its part of a wider marketing strategy, main successful use cases I have seen (outside recruitment etc) is for companies that use that to enhance their credibility, so while it might not be the best place to send all there audiences for direct conversions I have seen successes by having a strong profile and then relevant updates from company or individuals to build up a stronger brand presence.
